Bopha Devi - One of Melbourne's Worst Restaurant

Hi! How are you doing?

While strolling down the Wharfs of Docklands, we saw “Bopha Devi” we’ve seen great reviews on Urban Spoon for this joint. We expected amazing authentic Khmer (Cambodian) Cuisine.

Have a look at what we had, and the prices we paid

 1st K'dom 15.50
Chicken and crabmeat rolled together in crispy bread (3 pieces)

3 spring rolls and sweet chili sauce – consisting of crab meat and chicken wasn’t all real fresh meat, it was mushy and floury,  after the first bite, there was a bitter after taste (tasted like bitter melon). You may not like it if you hate bitter tasting food

2nd Somlah Machou Kroeung $23.50
Spiced tamarind based soup with celery, capsicum and flavours of lemongrass, turmeric and kaffir lime lives, served with steam rice

SOUP – sweet sour soup overly loaded with celery and onion, some red and green capsicum with imported cheap FROZEN prawns! If I paid $23.50 for soup I would expect more for my buck. FAIL!

3rd  Dried Shrimp Salad $18.50
Shredded carrot and green papaya - it was too salty (as in salt and not salty with fish sauce), not sour enough nor chili enough. We couldn’t even finish half the plate

4th Steamed Prahok 21.50
Fermented salted-fish (prahok) is steamed with minced chicken, onion and egg. Once it is dressed with lemon juice and spiced to your liking with chilli, the steamed prahok is eaten with crunchy slices of carrots, cucumber, celery and steamed rice (GF)

Main – like fermented dried salted fish mixed with minced chicken and rice, this was considered BEST IN HOUSE MUST TRY… FAILED so badly, it wasn’t salty enough we added lemon to give it more of a hit didn’t work. There wasn’t enough fermented fish and too much chicken. In my culture we stole these ingredients from the Cambodian and we cook it with pork not chicken. This dish was so westernized it wasn’t authentic, should rename the dame dish to “minced chicken with spring onion & fish sauce)

WTH, our bill came close to $100 after drinks, I would never come back here.
The food is below ordinary, and the price is high in the sky.

Maybe the only good thing was the French accent waiter that served us, the food was overly priced, below average, not fresh, presentation wasn’t grand and this wasn’t authentic Cambodian food for sure.
If you don’t try how would you know? That’s our motto, but since we’ve tried, I can definitely say that we will never come back here again nor recommend it to anyone else. If this meal was great, I wouldn’t have complaint about the bill. I've had a heap of authentic food at a fraction of the cost.
4/10 (eatable but not worth it)

Let's Talk Trash

Hi! How are you doing?

Let’s talk Trash? My wardrobe is in need of some serious clean up, some date back to when I started my high school years (over 10 years ago), thought what I no longer wear could go to a good cause, ie. Salvos, St Vincents or Good will people, however I’ve found some treasure in my trash. The skirt you see here is from 2003/2004 Scanlan & Theodore's collection, which I was meant to donate ages ago.
Well here I was confused as to “what to wear” today?! Since I just bought this Lace/Mesh sleeveless top by CBRL, I decided to team it with this midi skirt, which worked well with my Cue belt, the belt synched in my waistline and held up the skirt and top (it was “SMALL” in size, however not petite enough) all day long without falling off me.

What recent treasure have you found that you thought was trash?

Grill Steak Seafood

Hi! How are you doing?

Grill Steak Seafood is in the heart of Melbourne down bustling Hardware Lane. The live music and atmosphere during dinner time is pretty amazing.
There have been many reviews on how bad and slow the service is but on this occasion it was great for us. The food came out exactly like we ordered in time and synchronized.

Food wise we ordered a few dishes and there were a lot of similarities in each dish. For example the Mussels for the Entrée was exactly the same as our Surf and Turf dish (hence it wasn’t necessary to even order the bowl of Mussels in the first place). The Risotto Pescatore had the same sauce as our Mussel sauce, which wasn’t bad but the flavour is repetitive hence our taste buds got bored. We overdosed on prawns and beef which was in all of our mains (Scotch Fillet – cooked nicely! =D). Mushroom & Pepper dipping sauce was average.

All in all if you are going with 3-4 people, just order the “Surf and Turf”, a Salt and Pepper fried Squid for Entrée and side drinks. Even though the menu states “Surf and Turf” is made for 2 people, I recommend go with more people and enjoy a few extra entrees on the side.
6-7/10 overall  =D

Best Macarons in Melbourne

Hi! How are you doing?

La Belle Miette (meaning "beautiful crumb" or, more broadly, “beautiful small thing") is a small French patisserie specialising in macarons.

I think I found a new love for Macarons! I've had some at random Melbourne locations (Brunetti's many years ago, Crown Café, random café place in Melbourne and home made ones), but nothing compares to this! Most of what I’ve tasted seems somewhat powdery, grainy, chalky, too sweet, dry or raw.

It was such a spontaneous finding, one day at work a friend of a friend had came in for an Ultrasound scan, as a thank you gift she brought us some “La Belle Miette” macarons. I took the business card as a reference and had to repurchase it the next time I traveled to Hardware Lane.

There are many different delicous flavours of macarons here, from alcohol to chocolate to fruity sour flavours, and the packaging is just so elegant and cute, totally in love with this tiny gorgeous shop.

They are soft, tasteful, and smooth and melt in your mouth (just right). My favorite is the Salty Caramel Macaron, its filling is much chewier then the other flavours hence giving this one more of a special texture which complimented well with the crispy shell. Even though other filling flavors weren’t so special compared to its perfectly made shell, overall in my opinion this is the best Macarons I've ever had in Melbourne.
The only downside was its price, in 2-3 bites its gone, but its worth $2.50 per macarons. Other places charge more/ same but for the quality of $2.50 compared to other macaron shops, its worth it. I bought 18 macarons that day and the total came to $48! Expensive but once in a while, this could be an exception =)

What's your favourite Melbourne Macarons Shop?
